What does a Notary Public do?
A Notary Public can notarise documents for use all over the world. The documents have to be signed in the presence of a Notary Public appointed by the Court or by Royal Authority. The Notary has to be satisfied that the person signing has been correctly identified and that he or she understands the nature of the document and the legal implications of it. The Notary will witness the signatures and affix their own signature and Seal of Office.
The need for a notary public is dictated by the requirements of the country where the document is to be used. For example, if you wish to buy a property abroad, it is often necessary to give your overseas lawyer power to deal with the purchase. This can be done by means of a power of attorney, which is signed by you in front of a notary. The notary public will confirm your name and identity and sign the document and seal it with their official seal.
As an example, Doctors or Teachers or any one migrating to Australia, New Zealand, Dubai or any parts of the Middle East or America will require Documents to be Notarised

Examples of what Notary Public Coventry offers
In England, notaries frequently notarise a variety of documents for both individuals and businesses, particularly when these documents are intended for use abroad. The most common types of documents notarised include:
1. Powers of Attorney:
- These documents grant legal authority to someone to act on behalf of another person or company, often required for property transactions, business dealings, or legal matters in foreign countries.
2. Affidavits and Statutory Declarations:
- Sworn statements or declarations used as evidence in legal proceedings or official matters, particularly when the documents need to be recognised internationally.
3. Certified Copies of Documents:
- Notaries often certify copies of important documents, such as passports, birth certificates, academic qualifications, and company documents. These certified copies are used in legal proceedings, applications, or transactions abroad.
4. Commercial Contracts and Agreements:
- Businesses frequently require notarisation of contracts and agreements, especially for international trade, mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures, to ensure they are legally binding across borders.
5. Property and Property Documents:
- Notaries notarise documents related to the purchase, sale, or lease of property, particularly for transactions involving property in foreign jurisdictions.
6. Company Documents:
- These include certificates of incorporation, board resolutions, and articles of association. Companies often need these documents notarised to establish legal standing or for use in international business activities.
7. Consent Letters for Travel:
- Parents or guardians often need notarised consent letters for minors travelling abroad without them, ensuring that the travel is legally authorised.
These documents are critical in ensuring legal recognition and enforceability in both domestic and international contexts. Notarisation by a notary public in England adds a layer of authenticity and legal validity, which is often required by foreign authorities.

What is Legalisation or Apostille?
A notarised document may often need to be further authenticated by having the U.K. Foreign and Commonwealth Office confirm the validity of the notary's signature and seal. The requirement for this will depend on the foreign country involved. This is done by legalisation by the use of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's official certificate attached to the document, known as an apostille. These are internationally recognised due to the Hague Convention.
